The Importance of Repentance

The subject that tickles some feathers and scratches some ears. But it’s also the subject that some just need to hear. Yeah, you heard me, it’s the act that will change your life that is, repentance of course. If you’re seeking a relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to continue reading. If you’re already there, continue to spread the gospel like butter and pass the good message along the world.

Before we get started, I just want you to know that I’m not here to make everything sound sweet. In all honesty, there are going to be some things you may take as sour and that’s ok. Yes, repentance brings you into a place of freedom, but it can also bring you into a place that’s way out of your comfort zone, which can be, well– a little uncomfortable. And that my friend, is also ok. Why is that ok you may ask? Because change makes you uncomfortable, without it, unfortunately, you won’t get too far.
First, what exactly is Repentance? We all hear about it, but what is it and how do you repent, and what are you repenting?

Shown above, the definition of repentance is sincere regret or remorse. Repentance is asking God to forgive you for all of your sins, it’s making an oath with God that you are turning away from your old life of sin, and promising God that you will never go back. Repentance is when you sincerely feel in your heart the sorrowful, pain, and regret, for all of the sin that you have done against God. The Bible teaches us that Repentance leads us to salvation, and salvation — the great reward, eternal life after Christ’s return.

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”‭‭ Acts‬ ‭2:38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭13:5‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” ‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭3:1-7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭3:11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

How can you Repent your Sins?

It’s simple, say a prayer, but mean it with your entire heart and soul. Leave your old life behind you completely. You can put it into your own words, or you can go off by a short example shown below. You can do this!

“Heavenly Father, have mercy upon me O God, I repent my sins unto my God. I acknowledge before you my transgressions and I wholeheartedly seek your forgiveness. May you cleanse me from my sin, and wash me from my inquity. From this day forward O God, I choose to give you all of me. Amen.”

What is Baptism? How do I get Baptized?

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”‭‭ Acts‬ ‭2:38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Baptism is when you are submerged into water or full immersion, and brought back up. The reason we are baptized is because we were born in blood (sin), and the baptism represents being washed away from sin and born again of water. Paul refers to baptism as a “burial” or buried with Christ, in Colossians 2:12.

“This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.”‭‭1 John‬ ‭5:6

“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:12‬ ‭

What is the Holy Ghost and how can I receive it after I am baptized?

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26

“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭12:3-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

If you want to learn how to receive the Holy Spirit, you must repent and be baptized first and foremost. From my very own personal experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit, I completely let go. By that I mean, I didn’t care who was around me in church, I wanted God to know that I need him and love him, I wholeheartedly was open to do whatever it took for me to get closer to him. And all of a sudden, next thing you know, I was filled. Let go and let God.

I pray that this message has helped some and that I have shared it in the most understanding, most helpful way as possible. God bless you all.

“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5
